Pirates Attack Italian ship no-one hurt
Tuesday 22 November 2011, 09.36 (local time), approximately 8 nm south of the Gaalogod Somali region, ITS Andrea Doria was monitoring a Somali vessel suspected to be involved in piracy. While conducting the investigation, the boarding team was shot at from the suspect Somali vessel and from ashore. Nobody was hit. The NATO boarding team personnel returned fire. No damages to the rhibs. ITS Andrea Doria is assigned as Flag Ship to TF 508 under the command of Rear Admiral Gualtiero Mattesi on board of ITS Doria, flagship of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 engaged in Operation "Ocean Shield" to piracy off Somalia since June 14. Allied naval and air forces continue operations to prevent and combat criminal activities against merchant traffic in the area.
