Acts of piracy have been an ever present problem to seafarers throughout time. Today however the attacks have become more prevalent in areas of the world such as the much publicised Gulf of Aden.

Pirates have become more heavily armed and with the successes they have achieved in terms of ransoms have become ever more persistent and violent in their attacks. Such crimes are planned well in advance, with ships usually targeted for their high value and easy disposal of their cargo.

Although the Gulf of Aden is a current hotspot it is not the only area of the world where attacks take place. Shipping has the potential of compromised security in just about all areas of the globe including: South East Asia and the Indian Sub Continent, Coast of Africa and South and Central America.
